Hello! I’m Bryan
I'm a professional guitarist and certified guitar teacher with qualifications including a Master's degree in music. My whole life has been about one thing: the guitar! I studied the guitar for over a decade through private tutelage as well as academically, so luckily I’ve gotten the best of both worlds. I started teaching the guitar even before going to University over 8 years ago and this has slowly but surely developed into a full-time career.
Teaching Experience
Hosted educational workshops on songwriting/improvisation, coached rock bands and guitar ensembles
Playing Experience
Performed at The Domino Club, York Blues Festival and opened for Ray Greene, the lead singer for Santana
Qualifications
MA Music, BA Jazz, Diploma in Pop. Membership at Registry of Guitar Tutors and Independent Society of Musicians
WATCH MY STUDENTS PERFORM
As a teacher, I’m proud of every single one of my students. Some may have started from scratch or been self-taught before, but everyone has improved significantly over time and proved themselves when performing live at student concerts.
What are the lessons like?
The truth is, anyone with even a few years of playing the guitar can claim to teach the instrument. But teaching a proper course takes years of study, practice, experience, as well as the right theoretical and practical knowledge. With me, you can expect:
-
A set of specific methodologies with a focus on transcription and learning by ear. Lessons are structured and well-organised, allowing learning to be tracked. Measuring progress often links to better and faster results.
-
From basic to advanced, theory is an important aspect of learning music and should be used as a tool to understand the fundamentals of how music works. Theoretical knowledge can be applied practically to improve both your guitar playing skills and your general musicianship.
-
A clear and concise practice routine based on goals and targets, tailored to the individual’s needs, taking into account any strengths or weaknesses.
-
Bad habits are the worst things you can learn because not only are they harmful to your playing, but also because you often have to spend more time ‘unlearning’ them in order to go back to the correct way.
-
The student should not be subjected to egotistical attitudes, awkwardly sitting there while the teacher is enjoying themselves. That said, appropriately timed demonstrations and jams are welcome.
-
Every lesson is efficient and focused so that you always gain value, knowing exactly what you need to work on in order to achieve your goals and be where you want to be.
Helping guitarists become strong and confident players who play with style.
Let’s build you up from the core
Fundamentals and getting the basics right is extremely important to not just become a good guitar player but a strong and confident one. I believe in focusing on building the right foundations for you that will benefit you for years to come.
-
Not only will you form good habits on the instrument, you will establish a good mindset for learning in general. I’m sure you will come to appreciate the value of having good discipline, if you don’t already.
-
With only 24 hours a day plus work/personal commitments, knowing how to prioritise and fit in practice sessions is crucial. In doing so, sometimes it makes you evaluate your wider life goals and be aware of the importance of making time for yourself.
-
In truth, you can only learn and do so much with lessons. The rest is up to you what you do at home by yourself. That said, you will pick up invaluable skills that are applicable to any other thing that you do. For example, when planning out the order in which you learn the different sections of a song, you can find out whether tackling the difficult parts first will motivate you or hinder you.
-
The basics on the guitar will be repeatedly emphasised, but other elements extend beyond the instrument, covering general musicianship such as having steady rhythm, good pitch, and appropriate stylistic tastes.
-
A good set of ears will take you very far in your musical endeavours as you confidently rely on the most important asset for any musician.
-
Guitar playing is such a practical skill that having a solid technical foundation will set you up greatly for years to come.
