THE ELECTRIC GUITAR ISN’T EVERYONE’S CUP OF TEA.

IT REQUIRES SPECIALISED TRAINING.

Playing the electric guitar is a distinct musical pursuit, much like any other endeavour in life. I'm not a one-size-fits-all instructor. The electric guitar is what ignited my passion for music, and I've dedicated years to learning, performing, and teaching it. While the pros make it look effortless, mastering this instrument demands technique and expertise to channel its raw energy and capture its essence.

One of the biggest advantages of electric guitar over acoustic or classical is that it is easier to play. From a technical perspective, it requires less strength from your hands and fingers as the strings are often thinner (lower string gauge sizes) and closer to the fretboard (lower action which is the height between the string and the fret). The fact that it is amplified also means that less effort is needed when strumming in order to project a clear sound, unlike the raw and organic sound of an acoustic guitar.

The electric guitar is also one of the most versatile instruments, covering so many different styles of music. From your old-school Rock N’ Roll, Jazz & Blues, to Funk and Soul, to Country, Folk, and mainstream pop music, this particular instrument is iconic in the history of popular music and modern sounds.

Let’s Learn With Precision

A systematic and amicable learning process that lays a rock-solid foundation so you can confidently plug in and play.

Technique

Having good technique is like having a good tool that gets you where you want to be - a means to an end. Common electric guitar techniques include slides, bends, hammer-ons and pull-offs, palm-muting, vibrato etc.

Reading notation

The benefits of learning how to read standard notation far outweigh the shortcut of reading tablature. This skill is transferable onto any other Western instrument such as the piano, violin, saxophone, trumpet, or even drums! There’s useful information presented on the stave that are lacking in other forms of notation such as the letter names of each note and specific rhythms.

Fretboard

The first piano lesson typically involves learning where the middle C is, what the black notes are (sharps and flats), and the names of other white notes. However, the first guitar lesson usually starts with playing riffs by memorising fret numbers (think 0-3-5 for Smoke on the Water!). Guitarists are not learning the very instrument they are holding, and are instead taking shortcuts that present no musical value and may even be harmful in the long run.

Electric Guitar Techniques

String bends, slides, pinched harmonics, and vibrato are often required in order to achieve the sound of rock guitar playing, especially with an overdriven/distorted tone.

Theory

Theory helps you understand the fundamentals of music - basically how music works! You can then apply that knowledge very practically when playing the guitar. For example, quickly and effectively changing the key of a song to suit a particular vocal range, or choosing a scale pattern to jam along to your favourite tracks.

Deep listening

Picking out different parts of the song and seeing how they work together. There are many elements of music such as tone and dynamics which are beyond just notes themselves.
